One thing folks who are part of the “in” group can do to advocate for those who are in “out” groups in our community is to use their own IN status and platform to elevate, amplify and spotlight underrepresented folks.
Invite them onto the platform with you.
Next time you are invited to speak, invite someone from an outgroup to join and let them speak first.
If the paper calls you for a quote, give them names of other members of the community frequently not heard from.
If someone complains that an event wasn’t inclusive, listen, rather than minimize or get defensive.
All these little things add up.
